AGAVE aff. colorata
Ideal for cultivation in full sun and well-drained soil.
Agave aff. colorata “Mescal Ceniza,” a distinguished succulent from the coastal terrains of northwestern Sonora, Mexico. This slowly growing agave forms a compact rosette about 2 feet tall and nearly as wide, perfect for gardeners looking for a structured yet manageable plant. The agave showcases 5 to 7 inch wide, rough-textured blue-gray leaves that are as beautiful as they are resilient, featuring undulating, strongly toothed margins and distinctive white patterning across the leaf faces.
A typically solitary plant, the Mescal Ceniza seldom produces offshoots, maintaining a clean, uncluttered look around the main rosette. Its true spectacle arrives upon maturity, around 15 years, when it sends up a 10-foot tall stalk in spring, bearing panicles of red buds that open into stunning yellow and orange flowers.
Ideal for cultivation in full sun and well-drained soil, this agave requires infrequent watering, aligning with its drought-resistant nature. It thrives in USDA zones 8-11 and is hardy down to 18°F. The term ‘aff.’ indicates that while the plants we cultivate are similar to the species colorata, they are not identical, offering unique qualities that make each specimen particularly special.
Mescal Ceniza is not just a plant; it’s a striking addition to any landscape, promising to deliver both aesthetic beauty and a touch of desert resilience.
